Crafts@TheMalthouse Upcoming Workshops
We have been closed for what may feel like forever in crafting years!
The shop is open for personal shopping, one person at a time to maintain social distancing and to avoid you having to play Ms. Pac Man around the corners. Appointments are not required, but a quick call before coming may save you time outside waiting. According to Government mandates, a facecovering must be worn in the shop. Out of respect for you, I will be happy to 'mask up' while you are here.
Regular groups and workshops will not be held until social distancing is relaxed. We would love to play, but your safety comes first.
Glass fusers, have heart, Jazz is creating some 1:1 sessions and a monthly project take home kit is available in the shop.
'Crafternoon Casual' every Tuesday on Zoom. The room will be open for everyone to say hi and catch up at 9:50, then the topic will start at 10, to last an hour or less. I am working on having links to the recorded sessions available on this site. Each week will will be a different topic. If you want to craft along, and specific materials are needed, they will be announced in advance. Sometimes the topic itself will indicate what you need.
Crafternoon Casual on 28/7 will be an introduction to needle felting. The Crafty Kit Company has just released a few new kits, and they were irrestible. We had often spoken of starting a needle felting social group, but never had the time in the diary with all the crafternoon groups; we seem to have the time now! So this Crafternoon Casual is the introduction to the Malthouse felters. See what needle felting is all about, a virtual try before you buy! I will also be doing a bit of an experiment, presenting on a facebook live test group and sharing screen to Zoom. Crafternoons are always about a bit of experimentation and always fun.

Since attending the AFCI Creativation Trade show in The States, seeing and playing with so many exciting products, and looking at the retail space we have, The Malthouse will be changing - just a bit! Along with the 'needs' that we will always have, the stamps and stencils we stock will be changing. The Malthouse always likes to be different and give you materials that can help make a difference to your craft, therefore, you will find the cool, the innovative, the out of the ordinary and the inspiring with the new lines. Favouring individual manufacturers rather than mass marketed products, more in the spirit of Paper Artsy, who sell through stockists who teach and use their products. We love the designers and small companies who support education and promote exploration. We have stock coming from all over the world to complement our made in the UK favourites. Stencil Girl Stencils have arrived, the first shipment is almost gone! We will be setting up a play place so you can try them with the Aladine Izink lines when you come in for your personal shopping. I could tease you with others, but hey, we all need a little mystery.
I can't begin to tell you how much I have appreciated the designers across the globe who have been giving their time and sharing techniques through their facebook live postings. Many have now put up online classes, and they are very reasonable. Pick your favourite craft designers and look them up, take a course, learn a technique and have fun!
A word about the creative sector and lockdown...Please help artists and small shops recover by supporting your local community. Buy Gift certificates for a future class, find out who has online and distance learning courses, think of them when you are sending a gift to someone. See if your favourite artist ships, they may now even if they didn't before. Find out what has kept your friends occupied in lockdown, if they have discovered a new hobby, encourage it get them materials or training to take it further. Purchase online direclty from the designer's shop if you can, or the gallery that carries their work. Remember the Just a Card philosophy when the shops open, make a small purchase of something that you can use, Just a Card, can make a difference to a shop if everyone who went in spent just a little. If we did in every small business in our communities, think of how much faster the recovery will be. To you it's a £2.50 handcrafted one of a kind card. To me, it is one more item I can ask the local maker to deliver when she brings the next batch, a bit of cash flow to use to pay my local window cleaner, a reason to go to the post office in local shops to make a deposit and grab a pint of milk, for surely, when I pass by the local bake shop on my way home, I will have popped in for a loaf of bread and ended up with a slice of delicious cake or a brownie. Even after HMRC takes their 20%, your purchase contributed so much to the local community.
Until we know when we can safely hold workshops, we are not publishing any teasers of things to come. Rest assured, all the Tutors have been planning, plotting and anxious to share their talents with you.
Schrodinger's sneaky tip: You may be able to get a jump on signing up for new classes if you check our booking page on setmore once in a while 😊
