Tutors in Residence
Meet the Tutors... One of the things we set out to do at The Malthouse is have accessible, affordable courses taught by artists and crafters who have a wealth of knowledge and a passion to share it with others.  We could have a fancy mission statement, but we prefer to just make...

Jazz "The Alchemist" Dixon
Warm Glass

Jazz is The Malthouse Resident Tutor in Warm Glass. She holds a Designer Maker BA Hons. Since gaining her degree in 2016, Jazz has established herself as a successful local artist and tutor. She works with a wide range of Warm Glass techniques from traditional stained glass painting to slumping, fusing and casting. Jazz has a particular affinity with colour and organic forms. Her work can be found in several galleries, most notably The Makery in Eastbourne. 'Jazz The Alchemist' has a true passion for glass and enjoys introducing others to its wonders. Her business name is aptly chosen as she transforms her material, masterfully manipulating the way it reflects and transmits light. Thanks Jazz, you're a star and an inspiration with your creativity. [Personal note: working with Jazz to plan workshops is so much fun, I say "How about something called 'Under the Sea'?, she shows up with a sample that knocks my socks off - 3 little words interpreted in such an amazing project.]  @jazzthealchemist #jazzthealchemist #warmglass

Julie is our Resident Tutor for Encaustic Art and frequent guest tutor for papercraft. What this woman does with an iron and a block of wax is amazing. Not only talented with wax, she is a brilliant cardmaker, watercolour & acrylic artist and a dab hand at cooking and gardening.  Julie is a very patient teacher who appreciates the uniqueness of style of an individual and always encourages you to go beyond the examples she brings. She is a master of techniques and is rapidly expanding her mixed media toolkit through play and experimentation. Julie is the calm in the storm at The Malthouse.

Penny
Beading

In the 1990's Penny attended a Knitting & Stitching show at Olympia, attending classes In Peyote run by the Needlecraft shop at Longleat (now, unfortunately, closed). She learned to make a pair of ear-rings and a brooch, and was then hooked on beading.  After working in Peyote stitch for a while, she was introduced to some American beading magazines and expanded her skill set. Penny studied with a variety of teachers including Jean Power and started to work on some patterns of her own, two of which were published in the British Bead magazine and two which lie waiting for their turn in the spotlight. She continued beading whilst at work for presents and the odd sale. After finishing work in 2014, Penny attained a certificate in teaching lifelong learning, met Suzanne and started her new career. [Personal note: Penny is the reason the shop started stocking beads.] Penny says is is with the encouragement of The Malthouse Beaders and her affiliation with the shop that she has had more designs published and has taught quite a few ladies who are now branching out on their own, which is what it is all about.  One of Penny's patterns was used by the Beadworkers Guild as a make and take this past year.  Penny works with ACRES teaching a few beading classes and, more recently, macrame. Penny also volunteers at Anne of Cleves House, sharing her love of embroidery with the children who visit the site and she is a lacemaker in her spare time.
